Beyond the Code: How Syncli Landed a Spot in the YouthStartCT 2026 Accelerator
The YouthStartCT Entrepreneurial Challenge is a startup program designed to equip Cape Town youth (18–35) and existing small businesses with the skills, networks, and resources needed to transform ideas into sustainable ventures. It’s about strengthening businesses that tackle local challenges and create jobs.

I didn't think 2026 would kick off with such a wild start for us at Syncli. Getting accepted into a major startup program just months after launching is, frankly, pretty wild. Let me take you on the journey of how we went from a "failed idea" to an MVP, and suddenly, into a city-backed accelerator.
November 2025: Where it all started
To give you context, we have to backtrack to late 2025. Syncli wasn't our first try. In fact, we were on our final attempt at building a startup for the year. Our previous ventures had gone down in flames because, to be honest, we weren’t solving a real problem.
We decided we needed a change of plan. We needed to stop guessing and start asking what people in South Africa actually struggled with.
Fast forward through 50 DMs, and we finally struck gold. During a call with a tech reseller, he said: "I wish we could somehow sync our website data and WhatsApp data into one." That sentence grabbed me. I discussed it with my co-founder, Carlos, and his response was immediate: "Right, when do we start?" That was the moment Syncli was conceptualised.
Finding the Challenge
(Source: COCT Facebook page - Rashaad Sambaba - Everything Stationery)
I first heard about the YouthStartCT challenge when a post from Rashaad Sambaba (Everything Stationery) popped up on my Facebook feed just weeks before the closing date.
Like any obsessive founder, I went on a full-day searching spree. I researched every detail: who runs it, the service providers involved, the expectations, and the incentives. I even inboxed a 2025 participant to get the "real" story. She was incredibly helpful, explaining how the program shaped her mindset and her business.
I was sold. (Pro tip for the CoCT: Get more alumni speaking on social media—it works!)
The application process itself was seamless and took about 20 minutes. A few weeks later, I got the email: "Congratulations! #YSCT2026 Application Successful." Considering we had only launched Version 1 of Syncli two months prior, this was a massive milestone.
The First Session: From Small Business to Solution-Driven
Close to 1,000 applications were received this year, and only 150 made the cut. Being part of that group is a privilege we’re seizing with both hands.
Our first day kicked off with insights from previous winners and a talk on the South African startup landscape by Wesley Pillay. The big takeaway for me? It’s fine to start as a small business, but the goal is to never become comfortable staying one. We had to shift our mindset toward being truly solution-driven.
I met a diverse group working on everything from AI to community-driven social solutions. I even met a few business owners who saw exactly how Syncli could slot into their workflow to offer immediate value.
The Pitch: 120 Seconds of Nerves
Who would’ve thought speaking about your business to a live audience would be so nerve-wracking yet exciting? This was my first time pitching to a live crowd (DM me on the socials if you want to see the video!).
For weeks, I allocated 1–2 hours daily to refining the pitch. We had a strict 2-minute limit. It’s not much time to squeeze in the problem, solution, market opportunity, and finances, all while 100+ eyes are staring back at you.
The "Bullet Point Guy" Guide to Getting Accepted
If you’re reading this because you want to get into the next cohort, here are my top takeaways for increasing your chances:
Solve a Real Problem: Make sure your idea is actually viable and feasible. Don't build for the sake of building.
Align with SDG Goals: Understand how your business creates employment or impacts Cape Town specifically.
Think Big, Act Local: Don't get boxed into "small business" thinking. Have a vision for scale.
Practice Your Pitch: Then practice it again. Find the balance between emotional storytelling and hard business data.
Be Curious: Participate, ask questions, and be intentional.
Treat it Like a Competition: They’ll call it a "fun challenge," but it’s a competition. First impressions are everything—treat every practice session like the final stage.
What's next?
We have something exciting brewing for the second half of 2026 that could be a game-changer for how Syncli conducts business. I can’t say too much yet, but stay tuned.
We know we can’t outbuild competitors with massive VC pockets, but we can beat them by building a freaking awesome product that our customers obsess over. We are betting on ourselves for the long run to:
Build a sustainable business with real community impact.
Create a product we are proud of, shaped by your feedback.
Innovate until Syncli becomes a household brand.
When you back Syncli, you aren't just backing a lean team of tech-obsessed guys; you’re backing the future of chat commerce.
Here’s to the future, focusing on sustainability, a growth mindset, and pushing quality 24/7.
